Angel Backup vs. Carbonite Backup

So which is the best online backup service? There are far too many to choose from, and everyone's needs are different. So how do you choose? We've outlined the key differences between two of the most popular players: Angel Backup and Carbonite Backup.

It comes down to asking yourself a few simple questions:

1. Do you have more than one computer?

2. How much data do you have to back up?

3. Do you want to back up external USB hard drives or network drives?
4. Are you worried about deleting files by mistake?

At first glance, Angel Backup and Carbonite Backup may appear to do much the same thing - and indeed, they have much in common. Both will automatically back up your computer over your internet connection to a secure server, eliminating the need for you to make manual backups and also providing the added security of an off-site storage location for your data.

But, there are many differences between the services. Carbonite Backup charge a flat fee of $49.95 per year to back up one computer, whereas Angel Backup's prices start from $1.95 per month, which allows you to back up as many computers as you like, but with a data storage allowance of 2 GB. If you have more data to back up then the price increases accordingly.

Another key difference is that Angel Backup will allow you to back up external USB hard disks, and even network drives, whereas Carbonite Backup restricts you to just the internal hard drives of your Computer.

Both services will keep a version history of file changes, so if you're protected if you accidentally overwrite a file. But, have you ever deleted a file by mistake? Or worse, have you ever deleted a file by mistake and not noticed immediately what you've done? If the answer is 'yes', then be aware that Carbonite Backup will assume that you meant to delete the file, and will delete the backup copy after 30 days. Angel Backup will keep every file that is backed up for ever. Or, at least, until you delete the file from their servers.

So, there you have it. If you're in the market for an online backup service - and you should be! Then choose carefully. Not all services are equal, so be sure to choose one that serves your needs.
